Presenter:  Clair Mellenthin

Clair Mellenthin, LCSW, RPT-S,   Clair holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Southern California. Throughout her career, she has focused on providing therapy to children, teens, and their families. She is currently the Clinical Director at Wasatch Family Therapy. Ms. Mellenthin is a sought after supervisor, training graduate students and interns in play therapy, and an adjunct faculty member at the University of Southern California MSW program. She is currently the President of the Utah Association For Play Therapy. In addition to being an experienced play therapist and professor, Ms. Mellenthin frequently presents professional play therapy and family therapy trainings and appears on local and national TV and radio as an expert on children and family issues.

This training is available for professionals, students and adoptive or foster parents who are dealing with a trauma / attachment issues in their practice or in the home with a child.  This training will provide the professional with information that can be used in both the clinical setting and in the home with a foster/adopted child.   It is recommended the professional and student attend both days, but may benefit from one day.  Adoptive / foster parents are welcome to attend Saturday September 20th.

Day One:   Healing Complex Trauma Through Play Therapy

 

Description:  Working with children and families who have been exposed to trauma can be a daunting prospect for mental health clinicians. Trauma is manifested and experienced differently for each child, parent, and family system.
In this exciting daylong workshop for mental health professionals and graduate students, participants will learn:
• How trauma impacts brain development, relationships, and behavior.
• What complex trauma entails and how to assess for the warning signs
• How play therapy can help clients heal from and move beyond their personal trauma – letting go of their victim status and embracing their new role as a survivor
• Learn new play therapy tips and techniques to begin using in your practice immediately!
Learning Objectives:
1- Participants will learn how utilizing play therapy can help child trauma victims heal therapeutically
2- Participants will learn new play therapy techniques to address trauma symptoms manifested by children and families exposed to trauma
3- Participants will learn the difference between complex trauma, secondary trauma and primary trauma
4- Participants will learn how trauma impacts brain development, relationships and behavior

 

Saturday, September 20, 2014 ~ Boise 8:30am to 4:30pm, 6 hrs CEU

Day Two:  Healing Through Play: An Introduction to Attachment-based Play Therapy

 

Description:  Through the lens of attachment theory, participants will gain a new understanding of how children and families interact and bond to one another in healthy vs maladaptive ways. We will be looking at the manner in which trauma, abuse, and neglect impact the bonds of attachment within the family system and how the power of attachment-based play therapy can help to heal these wounds. Participants will learn new and innovative play therapy techniques and leave with a creative toolbox of tips, techniques, and a clear understanding of how attachment styles impact relationships.

 

Learning Objectives:
1- Participants will learn how attachment theory applies to play therapy and to view family systems through the lens of attachment.
2- Participants will be able to conceptualize attachment patterns that impact modern parent-child relationships.
3- Participant will learn skills in becoming more competent and confident in engaging parents in family play therapy.
4- Participants will learn effective evidence-based play therapy techniques that can be used immediately with their client populations.

Online Registration

Online Registration is only able to accommodate one registration at a time. That is why the mail in registration must be used if you are registering and paying for more than one person. Cancellations

Registration cancellations are submitted to Molly and Me Counseling and Training Center in writing.
• A $75 administrative charge, will be refunded only if the request is postmarked by August 31, 2014.
• Because registrations generate contractual and non-refundable guarantees between Molly and Me and other parties, registration refunds will neither be made after August 31, 2014 nor to parties who register but do not attend.
• Registrations may be transferred to another person without penalty only if original registrant notifies Molly and Me.
• Molly and Me reserves the right to cancel this conference in the event of unforeseen circumstances. If such occurs, Molly and Me will attempt to notify registrants at least 10 calendar days prior to the conference and refund all registration fees. In all instances, the liability of Molly and Me is limited to refunding such fees.

 

 

Continuing Education

Molly and Me’s Training Center is approved by the Association for Play Therapy to offer continuing education specific to play therapy (APT Provider #08-222).  12 CE hours for the two day conference are available for Social Workers, Counselors, and MFTs.
