Counseling

Welcome to Play Therapy!

Play therapy is different from regular play in that a qualified therapist helps children to process and resolve their problems through the power of play. Through play therapy, children learn to communicate their needs and thoughts, express feelings, modify behavior, develop problem-solving and social skills. Play provides a safe psychological distance from their problems.  This allows children to express their thoughts and feelings in age appropriate manners.

The national play therapy association also known as APT, defines play therapy as “the systematic use of a theoretical model to establish an interpersonal process wherein trained play therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development.”

Although everyone benefits, play therapy is especially appropriate for children ages 3 through 12 years old (Carmichael, 2006; Gil, 1991; Landreth; 2002; Schaefer, 1993). Teenagers and adults have also been known to benefit from play techniques and interventions.

Molly and Me Counseling is a safe place where children and families can come together to work through their troubling times.  They will find comfort in a warm and inviting environment coupled with therapeutic interventions that are intended to meet the needs of ones child and family in a non-threatening manner.

Molly uses both directed and non-directed play therapy with children and families.  Often when using directed play therapy it is used in a “prescriptive” approach.  Her theoretical focus combines expressive therapies, particularly play therapy, with behavior modification, skills training, Adlerian, and cognitive behavioral techniques. Children diagnosed with ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Depression, Bi-Polar Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, Attachment and Adjustment Disorders are welcome. Families who have experienced sexual, verbal or physical abuse, domestic violence, death, loss and grief, divorce, adoption or incarceration of a parent will find a safe environment for healing at Molly and Me Counseling. A unique treatment plan is created for every child following an initial evaluation where symptomology and life stressors are reviewed.  Children and adolescents may be seen individually or in family therapy. Parents may receive parent education and training on how to provide positive discipline for children while managing difficult and challenging behaviors.

With over 20 years of experience helping children and families cope with challenging life circumstances, Molly is dedicated to enhancing and empowering the lives of the people with whom she works.  Please contact molly@mollyandmecounseling.com or call 208-576-6464 for information on availability and rates or to set up an appointment.
